Assessment of exposure

Friday, January 19th, 2007

At the time of the studies, in 1992-1997, industrial hygiene conditions
were far better in enzyme production than what they had been
earlier. In the detergent factory, a new factory building with new
facilities had been built 10 years earlier, leading probably to a
reduction in enzyme exposure. Likewise, a shift from dry enzyme
preparation to liquid enzymes was occurring in the animal feed
industries. Consequently, the conditions seen and exposures
measured may not reflect the conditions that caused the sensitization
of workers in these industries. In the baking industry, however, the
exposure to enzymes was probably at the same level as it had been
since the start of enzyme use.

How to Deal with Skin Allergy

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

By Ally Wied Platinum Quality Author

Allergy is body hypersensitivity to some substance. Our body can react by
breathing system allergy (rhinitis and asthma), intestine allergy (diarrhea)
and skin allergy. Skin allergy may occur in the form of mild skin redness
until dermatitis, which can appear in many places.

Skin Allergy Identification

When you suddenly get the red spots and suspect an allergy, question your
self these:

-Do the red spot appear in a broad part of your body (at your arms and legs)
or just in a small part (at your palm hand)?

-What unusual food or even drug and food supplement have you taken?

-Do you change your detergent?

Small part of itchy redness in your palm may indicate that you have a skin
contact allergy. Avoid touching the suspected substance. Broad skin redness
may be suspected as caused by food allergy-something that goes with the
blood flow.

Skin Allergy Treatment

Corticosteroid combined with antihistamines cream or ointment can be used to
relieve skin redness. Dermatologist may prescribe a mixture cream contains
anti histamines, anti redness, and itchy reducer. Some topical
corticosteriods used for allergy treatment are betamethasone, clobetasol,
clobetasone,

desonide, desoxymethasone, dexamethasone, difluocortolone, flumethasone and
fluocinolone.

There is also natural herbs contained cream for allergy relieving. Some
herbs have anti histamine factor in their extract. You can use natural herbs
to relieve allergy. Check the label before buying some natural herbs base
allergy treatment to find any drug substance inserted in it. A natural herbs
treatment should not use any drug substances otherwise they are called
allergy drug.

Skin Allergy Alerts

Put a greater consideration in your skin allergy and consult your doctor if:

-Any topical treatment did not work out. No allergy symptoms like skin
redness and itchy feeling are reduced.

-You have another severe allergy symptoms like breath difficulty, faster
heartbeat, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Those symptoms are leading to
serious allergy that cause anaphylactic shock and should be treated soon by
a medical doctor.

Further Steps to avoid Skin Allergy

-Take an allergy test to know what substances you are allergic to. It is
called a patch test. Doctor will give some allergy suspected substances on
your skin and see which one cause you allergy. It is not a painful test but
useful to prevent from contact skin allergy.

-Always remember what you are allergic to and avoid things that can cause
allergy.

-Prepare an allergy cream as a first aid. At least the cream will prevent
from scratching your allergic skin.

Health Tip: Milk Allergy is Not Lactose Intolerance

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

(HealthDay News) — What’s the difference between lactose intolerance and a
milk allergy?

The Nemours Foundation offers this primer:

* Milk allergy is caused by an allergy to proteins in milk, while
lactose intolerance is an inability to break down lactose, a sugar in milk.
* Milk allergy most often occurs in infants, while lactose intolerance
usually occurs later in life.
* Milk allergy not only affects digestion, but also the skin and
respiration. Lactose intolerance primarily affects digestion, causing
symptoms including bloating, gas, and loose bowels.
* Milk allergy has the potential to be life-threatening, while lactose
intolerance is unpleasant but not dangerous.

What we should do? ——————

1, Always keep the baby neat and clean.

2, Cut the nails properly with utmost care.

3, Wet nappy should be removed and parts should be cleaned with soap.

4, Take care of the genitals because fungal infection is common in that area. Parts should be kept dry.

5,Care of the scalp is very important.Fungal infections, dermatitis ect can be prevented by proper cleaning.

6,Tight dress can cause irritation, hence dress should be loose and should allow entry of air.

7,Room should have sufficient light and ventilation. It should be free from dust and insects.

8,Seperate bed preferably water proof is needed for kids .It should be arranged near mother’s bed.

9, Always keep some music making toys near the baby.

10, While carrying the baby support the head with hand.Since the neck muscles are weak sudden fall of head can be dangerous.

11, Mothers milk is the best nutrition for the baby,it also gives emotional attachment.Breast milk should be given as per the babies need preferably in mother sitting position.Proper cleaning of nipple is also necessary.Mother should take good nutritious diet throughout lactating period.

12, If there is some contraindication for breast feeding cows milk can be given.Feeding bottle should be cleaned with warm water and should be kept dry till next use.

13, Cows milk should be boiled and cooled. Some diseases like bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis ect spread through raw milk.

14, Some children are allergic to some substances like food, milk, dress, cosmetics ect.. Try to find out the material causing allergy and avoid such things.

15, Mosquito nets should be used regularly.Diseases like malaria, dengue ,filariasis, yellow fever and ect spread through mosquito bites. Mosquito bite can also produce skin eruptions with some allergic reactions. It also disturbes sound sleep.

16, A calm atmosphere should be maintained for a good sleep.Compared to adults infants need more sleep. It is said that growth hormone secretion is activated during sleep.

17, Growth developement, behavioral developement, motor developement, personal social developement, language developement ect should be noted down in relation to age. However parents need not be over anxious because slight variations are seen from individual to individual.

18,Assessment of growth by measuring height and weight is necessary.

19, In the early months of life infant may defecate after every feed.Proper toilet training should be given when the infant grows. The infant can be placed on the toilet seat by the age of ten months.

20, The toilet seat (potty seat) should be cleaned with antiseptic liquid before and after use.It should not be shared by other children.

21, If the baby shows some signs of distress like excessive crying, convulsions, fever with rigor, stiffness of neck, frequent vomiting and diarrhoea, bluish discolouration of the body, difficult breathing with grunting, ect pay attention and consult your doctor.

26, When the infant starts walking always accompany him to prevent a fall and injuries thereby.

27, In emergencies take the first aid measures and take the victim to nearby hospital.

Choking :–The baby may swallow some solid objects and cause obstruction. Immediately make the baby to lie on the abdomen in head low position and press the abdomen backwards and towards the chest. Stroking the upper back is also useful. If no result call a trained person to take the material with the help of forceps.

Accidental poisoning:– Try to takeout the poisonous subatance and induce vomiting (except kerosine & acids). Wash the body with water to reduce absorption through skin.Identify the pioson and take the victim to the hospital.

Holiday allergies? You’re not alone By KIMBERLY DURNAN

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

The Dallas Morning News The holidays can mean lots of sneezing, as allergy sufferers face exposure to moldy Christmas trees, dusty ornament boxes and parties in the homes of pet owners. Removing holiday decorations from musty attics and garages can kick up dust and molds, said Dr. Rebecca Gruchalla, chief of allergy and immunology at UT Southwestern. She suggests washing fabric decorations before hanging them, and cleaning dust-coated decorations and artificial trees in the outdoors to clear the dust and mold from the home. Though Christmas trees generally get a bad rap, many of them are not inherently allergenic. However, mold on the trees can be an irritant, said Dr. William Neaville, an immunology specialist at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. “Mountain Cedar is not an allergy causer,” he said. “However, trees can have irritants such as pesticides or fragrance sprays.” Dr. Gruchalla recommends frequently changing the water in the stand to combat mold growth. And you might get less mold growth if the tree skirt doesn’t completely cover the water reservoir, she said. The holidays are also a time when people with food allergies have to be careful about eating homemade baked goods or attending holiday parties. Foods such as eggnog, cookies and candy often contain hidden food allergens such as milk, eggs and nuts, said Dr. Richard Honsinger, chairman of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Homemade treats do not generally list ingredients, and can be contaminated with allergens through contact with baking sheets and utensils. Anne Muñoz-Furlong, founder and CEO of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, said party hosts should include a note with invitations asking guests to mention any allergies or special food needs with their R.S.V.P. If guests bring dishes, ask what’s in them, and announce ingredients as you pass the dish around. Using an antihistamine before a party can also reduce the severity of accidental exposure, Dr. Honsinger said. Other things that can spark a reaction include scented candles and wood stored for fireplaces – and people who are allergic to pet dander should take precautions when attending get-togethers in the homes of friends and family with dogs and cats, Dr. Neaville said. “If you are going to Grandma’s house and she has a cat, pre-treat yourself and take your allergy medicine a couple of days before you go,” Dr. Neaville said. “This is particularly important if you have asthma.”

Treat Your Allergies Naturally by Chris Chenoweth

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

The most effective, least expensive, and healthiest treatment for allergies is always avoidance, yet many people will choose medications and vaccinations, despite their dangers and drawbacks. There are many methods to help with avoidance. Using any of these methods is helpful in treating your allergies. If you think you must strip your house down to bare floors, bare walls, and plastic covers on your furniture, you are wrong. For instance, if you have asthma or allergic reactions to molds or dust mites, there are some simple measures you can take. Keep your home at a consistent cool temperature between 68 and 72 degrees and keep humidity at a minimum. Always make certain there is good ventilation.Since people spend one-third of their lives in their bedroom, it is a good idea to place the most emphasis on decreasing the possibility of dust in the bedroom. The best way to do this is to wash your bedding in water that is at least 130 degrees to completely kill the dust mites found there. (Make sure you choose bedding that can withstand the harshness of weekly hot-water washings.) Dust mites can become airborne during bedding changes. Allergic persons should not be present.

If you must use carpeting (wood, tile and linoleum floors are best), then it must be cleaned thoroughly and frequently; the same rule applies to upholstered furniture, draperies and any other items than cannot be removed and washed. Make sure the person who is allergic does NOT do the vacuuming as the dust mites can become airborne and redistribute themselves.

The vacuum cleaner bag acts as the filter in most vacuum cleaning systems. Replacing the standard bag with a high-filtration bag and an exhaust filter are economical ways to update an older vacuum cleaner and helps prevent the dust mites from escaping and becoming airborne during the vacuuming process.

There are more expensive vacuums available with built-in HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters and a removable canister that can be washed. This system eliminates the problem with vacuum bags. As the older generation of vacuums is phased out, this development should be quite helpful in allergy control.

DUST CLEANING TIPS

*Purchase a good air purifier. Air purifiers literally purify the air and are very beneficial for allergy sufferers and asthmatics.

*Remove carpeting and install wood, tile, or linoleum flooring. Hard surfaces can eliminate ninety percent of dust mites.

*Minimize throw rugs; they are dust-catchers. If you must have them, they need to be washed in hot water once a week.

*Avoid open bookshelves; they are great dust-catchers.

*Keep all clothes in closed drawers or closets.

*Remove clutter. Place hard-to-clean items in closed drawers or cabinets.

*Install central air conditioning or window units. Keep windows closed, especially during periods of high pollen counts and windy conditions.

*Use washable cotton or synthetic blankets. Use easily laundered cotton bedspreads or coverlets. Avoid materials that have nooks and crannies where dust mites can collect.

*Your upholstered furniture is a prime allergen trapper. If you cannot purchase wood or vinyl furniture, put washable slipcovers on your furniture and wash once a week in hot water.

*Install window shades made from cotton or synthetics and use washable cotton curtains. Avoid mini-blinds and heavy draperies, both are very heavy dust-catchers.

*Do not use pillows made from feathers or foam rubber; moisture can become trapped, promoting mold.

MOLD CLEANING TIPS

*Wash shower curtains at least once a month in hot water and bleach.

*Keep the humidity level at a minimum inside your home.

*Always make sure there is proper ventilation.

*Never carpet the bathroom.

*Keep your refrigerator clean. Remove spoiled food promptly.

*Dry your shoes and boots before putting in closet.

If you or any member of your family suffers from allergies, follow the guidelines listed above to help keep your home as allergen-free as possible. If you are still suffering from allergy symptoms, see your doctor. He/she may have additional suggestions for allergy-proofing your home.
