Are you the parent of a child who has a peanut allergy? If you are and if this is a first time experience for you, you may be looking for some guidance. After all, knowing that your child’s life is, literally, in your hands, can be overwhelming for many parents.

One of the first things that you will want to do, as a parent, is talk to your child about their peanut allergy. This is important to do as soon as your child can understand the concept of allergies and not eating certain foods. This time often occurs at the preschool level. You may need to talk to your child more than once, but it is important to let them know what could happen if they share food with friends or classmates. If your child is older or a teenager, you can teach them proactive steps, such as checking all food labels.

As important as it is to talk to your child about their peanut allergy, it is extremely important to talk to anyone who may come into contact with your child. These individuals include teachers, school nurses, family members, and parents of friends. You may be surprised to know that many food allergies, including allergic reactions to peanuts, happen when a parents is not present. That is why it is extremely important that all adults know about your child’s allergic reactions to peanuts. When your child leaves your home to visit friends or family, pack safe snacks for them to eat.

If you and your child are known for eating out, it is important that you ask as many questions as possible. You should do so at all eating establishments, but it is particularly important to do at a bakery. Are all baked goods made in the same spot, like on the same table? Even if not, are gloves changed? What are the chances that a peanut or peanut butter can make its ways into other foods? You should know before feeding your child anything that you did not prepare yourself.

Speaking of the foods that you do prepare yourself, be sure to read all food labels. When doing so, you may be surprised just how many products have warnings that claim that peanuts may be present. Even if they only “may,” be, you are still advised to proceed with caution and skip. Also, make sure that you always read labels, as food manufacturers are known for updating or changing their ingredients.

It is also important to know how to handle a reaction. There is a good chance that your child’s doctor will teach you the proper steps that you should take, which will likely include administering medicine to help your child breathe. It is also important to educate those around you too. Make sure that all relatives, parents of friends, and school teachers know what to do in the event of an allergic reaction to peanuts. If medication is provided by your doctor, which it should be, make sure the school has some and always carry the medication with you, like in your car or in your purse.

The above mentioned tips are just a few of the many tips that you will want to keep in mind, should your child have a peanut allergy. It is no secret that caring for a child with a peanut allergy can be difficult and stressful, as you really do need to watch every step that you and your child take. For that reason, there are a number helpful books out there for parents like yourself, as well as online message boards where support is provided, often by other parents just like you.

Do you suffer from allergies? If you do, you may always be on the lookout for ways to seek relief. Although there are a number of natural ways that allergy sufferers are able to treat or manage their symptoms, many turn to medicine. Whether it be prescription medications or over-the-counter medications, many find themselves wondering which ones are the best.

When it comes to determining which allergy medications are the best, there are a number of important points that must first be taken into consideration. One of those points is the type of allergies. For example, different individuals suffer from different allergies. Some suffer from pet allergies, some suffer from mold allergies, some suffer from food allergies, and so forth. Some medications are better for those with certain allergies, as more targeted treatment is provided. One of the best approaches to take is to speak with a professional healthcare provider or do the research online.

Insurance is another factor that should be taken into consideration. Many individuals like to research and compare prescription medications and over-the-counter medications for allergies. With that being said, some individuals do not have the opportunity to try both. For example, if you do not have health insurance, you may be unable to afford the cost of a healthcare visit, as well as the cost of prescription medicine. If you are one of those individuals, you are encouraged to spend most of your time focusing on over-the-counter allergy medications. The good news, however, is that many medicines that were once only available with a prescription are now available without a prescription.

As for what allergy medications are the best, you will find that it all depends, as previously stated. A great way to get started is to speak with a healthcare provider. If you have health insurance, you are advised to schedule a visit with your doctor. In addition to getting a prescription, your doctor may be able to help you with other ways to manage or treat your allergy symptoms. Chances are if your doctor prescribes an allergy medication to you, that medicine is likely to work. If medicine is not prescribed, it is still a good idea to ask your doctor about over-the-counter products, namely which ones work the best.

If you must rely on over-the-counter allergy medicines or if you choose to do so, you may want to do a little bit of research first. There are a number of websites online that allow internet users to rate and review products. Walgreen’s and DrugStore.com are just a few of the online pharmacy websites that allow the rating and reviewing of products. You are encouraged to review these ratings, as well as read any reviews that accompany them. Of course, individuals respond differently to different over-the-counter products, but you can get a good idea as to whether you should buy the allergy relief product that you wanted to buy or if you should just save your money.

In addition to speaking with a healthcare provider or using the internet to research allergy medications, it is also a good idea to speak to those that you know. You may be surprised just how many individuals there are that suffer from allergies. There is a good chance that some of your friends, family members, neighbors, or coworkers suffer from allergies. If they do, inquire as to how they treat those symptoms. If they have tried multiple prescriptions or multiple over-the-counter allergy relief medications, which ones did they like or dislike and why? Were there side effects? These are all important questions that you will want to ask.

As a recap, there are a number of prescription medications and over-the-counter products that are known for their great results. With that being said, everyone reacts different to medications, especially where side effects are concerned. For that reason, you should develop a treatment plan with a professional healthcare provider or rely on trial and error with over-the-counter products.

The good news is that you really don’t have to strip your house down to the bare bones to make it allergy proof.
Thorough and regular cleaning generally makes a huge difference in keeping your house as mold and dust free as possible.
Patients with asthma or allergic rhinitis that are due to dust mites, molds, or other indoor allergens can feel better by taking these simple measures:

    * Keep the home cool (between 68 and 72 degrees F);
* Maintain a low humidity (between 40 and 50%); and
* Make certain there is good ventilation.

Avoidance is always the best treatment for allergies regardless of which allergens are the triggers.

Interestingly enough, the most effective, least expensive, and simplest options are not always followed.

Many people choose medications or vaccinations instead, despite their drawbacks.
Fortunately, there are lots of simple methods, both old and new, to help with avoidance. Remember, putting into practice any of these measures can only be helpful in managing your allergies.

When patients get started with the process of “allergy- proofing” their homes, one of two things usually happens.

They either do nothing or “overdo it.” Some patients become so overwhelmed with all the
different methods of allergy- proofing that they simply do nothing.

That’s always a disappointing outcome, especially when the process is so straightforward and inexpensive.

Just focusing on the basics of a routine and thorough cleaning and temperature and humidity reduction can lead to fewer symptoms and a vastly improved quality of life.

Sometimes, the opposite occurs. The allergy-proofing process becomes all consuming and inordinately expensive.

Overpriced and often inefficient whole-house filtration devices are installed when simple
cleaning and reduction of humidity and temperature would have been adequate.

Clearly, there are situations in which extreme measures need to be undertaken. Before going down this path, however, it’s best to consult with your doctor. Start with the easy things first.

Cleaning Tips

    * Avoid ornate furniture. Plain, simple designs accumulate less dust. No open bookshelves; they are

great dust-catchers.

    * Keep all clothes in drawers or closets, never lying about the room. Enclose wool clothes in plastic zipper bags. Avoid mothballs, insect sprays, tar paper, or camphor. Keep drawers and closet doors closed.

    * Remove as much clutter as possible to make cleaning easier. Place hard-to-clean items in closets, drawers, or display cabinets with glass doors.

    * When choosing furnishings, it is best to go with wood, leather, vinyl, or rubberized canvas
furniture and avoid upholstered pieces. Upholstery easily traps allergens and is much harder to clean. You might try washable slipcovers on existing upholstered furniture.

    * Install wood, tile, or linoleum flooring. Limit throw rugs to those that can be easily cleaned in the washer. They should be able to withstand washing weekly.

    * Use allergen-proof encasings for pillows, mattresses, and box springs. Tape over zippers to help prevent leaks. Vacuum all casings frequently. Store nothing under the bed.

    * Use washable cotton or synthetic blankets, not fuzzy surfaced ones. Use easily laundered cotton bedspreads or coverlets; avoid chenille.

    * Install roll-up washable cotton or synthetic window shades. Avoid venetian blinds, mini-blinds, and pleated shades.

    * Use washable cotton or fiberglass curtains. Avoid draperies and decorative fabric window
treatments!

    * Install central air conditioning or window units. Keep windows closed, especially during periods of high pollen counts and windy conditions. Grasses, weeds, and trees tend to pollinate during the early morning hours. Sleep with the windows closed.

    * Use Dacron or other synthetics for pillows. Avoid feathers or foam rubber, which traps moisture and promotes mold and dust mite growth.

    * Space heaters are preferred over hot air ducts. In homes with forced air heat, use filters or damp cheesecloth over inlets to reduce dust circulation. Change every two weeks. Consult your physician about air purifiers. Keep beds away from air vents.

    * Damp dusting using a dampened cloth or an oiled mop will minimize the distribution of dust through the air.

Baby’s Room - Special Tips

It’s a good idea to eliminate potential irritants and allergens from your baby’s environment. Here’s what you can do to help eliminate potential sources of allergens from your baby’s world.

    * Wood or plastic chairs are best for baby’s room.

    * Again, avoid all feather bedding.

    * Use dust-proof casings for all bedding.

    * Stuffed animals should never be placed in the crib and, if used, should be washable. Put most of the stuffed items in a closed chest or closet. Store them in a freezer bag when not in use.

    * When it comes to gifts for children, ask for books rather than stuffed animals. Keep the books in a bookcase with doors to help reduce allergens.

    * Humidifiers should be reserved for croup. They should not be used routinely since they increase the dust mite and mold counts. If a humidifier is required, the cool water variety is safer than a steam humidifier in terms of burns. Also, be sure to change the water daily if a humidifier is necessary.

    * Animal fur is a potential allergen. It’s best to keep pets out of the baby’s room.

    * Overhead mobiles and wall hangings collect dust!

    * Baby bumpers should be simple and washable. No ruffles or pleats.

    * Ruffled curtains and venetian blinds collect a lot of dust. Vertical blinds are preferable. If
levelers or shutters are used, be sure to clean them weekly with a damp cloth.

    * The crib should be placed away from air vents.

    * A HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air-filter) can be placed under the crib. The filter

will help to decrease airborne allergens such as pollens, mold spores, and animal danders.

Many people are afflicted with some type of allergy to all sorts of things, such as environmental allergens, odors, fumes, food, and cigarette smoke just to name a few.If you suffer from allergies and are looking for allergy treatment, then you likely know that allergy treatment comes in a variety of forms. For one, allergy treatment can come from small lifestyle changes, such as a commitment to eating different foods or to avoiding certain situations. Allergy treatment can also come in the form of medicine, such as a shot or a pill. Here is a brief overview of these two most common types of allergy treatments:

If symptoms become uncomfortable and happen on a routine basis, then allergy treatment and testing may be in order.Environmental allergies are a little trickier. Consider all the possible triggers; weeds, trees, pollens, grasses, dust, dust mites, molds, pet dander, chemical fumes, and cigarette smoke are all popular offenders. Skin allergy testing is the best method to use for diagnosis of these types of allergies if severe enough to warrant this approach. Allergy treatment can then be prescribed based on the level of reaction to certain irritants. Not everyone with allergies has to seek help from a specialist. There are quite a few over-the-counter medications that are very effective in treating symptoms, but if this doesn’t work, then a professional should be consulted. Many times allergies are present with other conditions such as eczema and asthma, and should be evaluated in conjunction to allergy treatment since they all go hand in hand. By treating allergies, related conditions will resolve themselves
or lessen significantly as allergy treatment progresses.

Prescribed allergy treatment usually consists of immunotherapy, better known as allergy shots, which expose allergy sufferers to tiny amounts of the offending allergens in gradually increased doses that over time decrease symptoms. Of course, substances that cause severe allergic reactions, such as certain foods (shellfish, eggs, peanuts) and bee stings should be avoided completely. Avoidance is the only allergy treatment in this case, aside from using an Epi-Pen and/or Benadryl in case an accidental exposure occurs. Different allergy treatments and combinations thereof may have to be tried before significant relief occurs.

Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is a common problem in infants and children. The most common symptoms include a stuffy or runny nose with clear drainage, sneezing, itchy eyes and nose, sore throat, throat clearing and a cough that may be worse at night and in the morning.

These symptoms usually occur during certain times of the year for people with seasonal allergies, corresponding to being exposed to outdoor allergens, such as tree pollens, grasses and weeds.

Other people may have perennial allergies, with problems occurring year round from exposure to indoor allergens, such as dust mites, pets, second hand smoke and molds.

Other signs of having allergic rhinitis include the ‘allergic salute,’ a common habit of children which consists of rubbing their nose upward. This is usually because the nose is itchy and this practice can lead to a small crease in the skin of the lower part of the nose.

Children with allergic rhinitis also commonly have ‘allergic shiners,’ which are dark circles under the eyes caused by nasal congestion.

Allergic rhinitis does run in certain families and are more common in children that have asthma or eczema. It is also more common in children that are exposed to second hand smoke, air pollution and pets.

Having uncontrolled allergies can put your child at risk for getting a secondary sinus infection, ear infections, and for having poor concentration at school. It can also make asthma symptoms worse.
Allergy Treatments

The best treatment for allergic rhinitis is to avoid what your child is allergic to by following the prevention and environmental controls described below.

Although food allergies as a trigger for a runny nose is not common, if you notice that your child’s allergy symptoms always get worse after being exposed to certain foods, then you should avoid those foods. The most common foods that can cause problems include: milk, eggs (especially egg yolks), peanuts, soybeans, tree nuts, seafood, and wheat.

Allergies can interfere with even the most commonplace of daily events; for those who suffer from allergies, even leaving their house during certain times of year can prove nearly impossible. For sufferers, finding effective, long-lasting allergy relief can mean a significant difference in their life. And while many have found great success with oral medications and allergy shots, there is an alternative treatment option that comes with its own benefits – allergy drops.

Allergies are the result of the body’s immune system malfunctioning. When the body is introduced to something that it considers a threat, it reacts accordingly in an effort to rid the body of the toxin. With allergies, the immune system reacts to otherwise benign substances as if they are a threat – pollen, cat dander, nuts, or any other number of elements. To fight what it considers to be trespassers, the immune system releases the chemical histamine that results in the common symptoms of allergies – runny nose, congestion, coughing, wheezing, watery and itchy eyes, etc. In many cases, avoiding the allergy trigger or combating the symptoms with over-the-counter or prescription medication can make a world of difference for the allergy sufferer. But for those who suffer more intense symptoms or are exposed to their allergens on a daily basis, allergy shots have been the effective treatment of choice. But research has shown that allergy drops can be just as effective – and far more convenient – than allergy shots.
Allergy shots are often given once a week and must be injected in a doctor’s office. Further, there is time associated with this visit as the patient is often injected with extremely diluted allergens. The patient must then wait – often at least thirty minutes – before being able to leave the doctor’s office as the doctor must first ensure that the patient is not having any negative reactions. This inconvenience of visiting the doctor - and the discomfort of the injection itself - often causes patients to shy away from pursuing the treatment.

With allergy drops there are no painful injections – simply a drop put under the tongue. This procedure is something that the patient can do themselves at home; doctor visits are reduced to just a few times a year in order for the doctor to follow the progress of the patient. For children who suffer from allergies, the allergy drops can be enormously beneficial allowing them to receive the necessary treatment without having to get a shot once a week.

Allergy drops are but one alternative to the management of allergies on an ongoing basis. For allergy sufferers, they can make a world of difference in keeping symptoms at bay and maximizing comfort levels.

Because the types of known allergens are so varied, most forms of allergy treatment focus on treating the symptoms rather than the causes.

Any treatment plan for an allergy will include avoidance – completely avoiding the allergen known to trigger an allergic reaction. However, avoiding an allergen is not always possible. The allergen may be airborne and constantly present (e.g., dust) or the individual may be highly sensitive so that even minute amounts will trigger a reaction. Therefore, a number of other strategies may be necessary to treat allergic conditions.

The majority of allergy treatments are designed to ease symptoms of an allergic reaction that has already occurred. There are some treatments, however, designed to prevent the onset of allergic reactions in people with known allergies, reduce the frequency of reactions or reduce the severity of symptoms if a reaction does occur.

Most allergy treatments for symptom relief are in the form of medications. Some medications target specific symptoms (e.g., itchiness, difficulty breathing). Others may target the relief of a variety of related symptoms, such as those associated with hay fever (e.g., runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes).

Medications may be effective in one of two ways: symptom relief or symptom prevention. Symptom relief medications are taken after the onset of symptoms to reduce allergy symptoms that are already present. These medications may seek to either:

    * Interrupt the allergic cascade itself (e.g., antihistamines, leukotriene modifiers). These medications interfere with the histamines and leukotrienes released into the bloodstream during an allergic reaction. It is these chemical mediators that promote common allergy symptoms throughout the nose, throat, lungs, skin and gastrointestinal regions.

    * Directly target symptoms caused by the allergic reactions (e.g., decongestants, bronchodilators). These medications often target the cellular swelling or blood vessel constriction that leads to symptoms such as runny noses, itching and redness. Other types of these medications help to relax and open airways and loosen mucus to improve a person’s breathing.

Symptom prevention medications are taken before the person comes into contact with an allergen to lessen the severity of an allergic reaction or prevent symptoms entirely. This usually requires the daily use of medication.

Allergy medications can be administered in a number of ways. These include:

    * Pills. Solid form of medication that is swallowed. The medication dissolves and is absorbed into the bloodstream through the lining of the stomach and intestines.

    * Inhalers. Aerosol devices that allow medications to be delivered directly to the interior of the lungs through inhalation.

Inhalers are portable devices that deliver medication to the lungs to treat breathing problems. Dry Powder Inhaler

    * Nasal sprays. Sprays that distribute medicine – through the nose – directly to the nasal passages in the form of a fine mist.

    * Eye drops. A sterile solution or medicine that is applied directly to the surface of the eye in the Nebulizerform of liquid drops.

    * Nebulizers. Devices that use a compressor to convert liquid medication into a fine mist that can then be inhaled into the lungs.

    * Topical creams. Medications in lotion or ointment form that can be spread directly onto the skin where it is absorbed into the body.

    * Injections. Uses a needle and syringe to push liquid medication directly into body tissue.

Allergy medications are available over-the-counter (OTC), as well as by prescription. However, OTC allergy products are still medications, and should be treated as such.

All allergy medications have the potential to cause side effects, some of which could harm the patient. For instance, people with high blood pressure may be advised against taking decongestants because they can raise blood pressure. Patients should discuss OTC allergy medication with their physicians before using them.

In addition, patients experiencing any side effects from their allergy medication (prescription or OTC) should contact their physician. The physician may be able to prescribe another type of medication.

Patients should take allergy medications exactly as prescribed by their physician, because untreated allergy symptoms can lead to further complications. For instance, people who “ignore” their allergy symptoms and do not treat them can develop sinus and ear infections (otitis media). Overuse of allergy medication can also lead to problems. Those who use OTC decongestant nasal spray for more than three consecutive days can actually worsen their nasal symptoms (e.g., swelling, congestion).

Another form of allergy treatment focuses on desensitizing an individual to a specific allergen over time. This is accomplished through regular allergy shots, usually over a period of months or years. Each shot exposes the person to greater amounts of the targeted allergen. Eventually, the person’s immune system becomes tolerant to that allergen. Allergy shots can result in severe reactions in very sensitive individuals and some people fail to respond to the treatment at all. For these reasons this treatment is not always effective. They are also not an effective treatment for some types of allergies (e.g., food allergies).

An allergy refers to the adverse reaction of the body¡¯s immune system to certain allergens such as dust, pollen, certain foods, and fur. Another way to describe allergy is the abnormal reaction to a normal substance. The immune system defends the body from harmful organisms. When the immune system is protecting body from all kinds of infections, the inflammation, soreness, and running nose are a small price to pay for optimum health. However, when the same distressing symptoms and hypersensitivity are due to everyday things not harmful to our health, then allergy treatment should be found. The key to the immune system, cause of allergy symptoms, and so to allergy treatment, is the thymus.

The thymus is a grayish organ located in the upper interior portion of the chest cavity, just below the neck and plays an important role in controlling the immune system. People with under-active thymus are more likely to fall ill and get common, chronic and prolonged infections. The role of the thymus in allergy treatment is therefore crucial. But to find relief from allergy symptoms, the answer lies not in tinkering with this delicate part of the body, but supplementing thymus hormone in the body.

More About the Thymus in Allergy Treatment

A healthy thymus ensures a healthy immune system, less prone to different allergy symptoms. This is because the main function of the thymus gland is to produce white blood cells, which are important in developing cell based immunity and are responsible for protecting the body from infection, yeast, viruses, parasites, fungi, and even cancer. Inflammation and other allergy symptoms are the body¡¯s last line of defense from attack. Therefore, with a thymus deficiency we have fewer white blood cells, and fewer white blood cells mean our body is more prone to allergy symptoms.

However, supplementation of thymus hormone helps in allergy treatment and relief from symptoms in many other ways.

Produce Immunocompetent T-cells.

Thymus plays a great role in allergy treatment and symptom relief by developing immature T-cells into immunocompetent T-cells, which are present in the cellular immune system of the body and are responsible for identifying the foreign substances in body and destroying them. Put simply, it is the thymus that allows our ¡°cadet white cells¡± to graduate from military college into a fighting fit allergy treatment crack squad.

Allergies can be treated by the desensitization method, in which extremely small doses of allergens are given to the allergy patients to stimulate their immune system so that the thymus reacts immediately and create new T-suppressor cells. The T cells secrete a substance to attack the protein of foreign cells and helps in allergy treatment besides maintaining cellular immunity.

Regulate the Immune system

The thymus releases many hormones such as thymopoeitin, thymosin, and serum thymic factor that regulate many immune functions that are helpful in allergy treatment. Thymosin is responsible for the development of antibodies, particularly T lymphocytes (T cells) to provide effective treatment and relief from allergy symptoms. Thymus gland hormones can also increase the key immune signals called lymphokines and increase interferon, interleukin 2 (IL2), and other hormones that are responsible for the production of white blood cells that fight germs, infections, and allergies.

Thymus hormones have the capability of increasing disease fighting antibodies balancing and boosting the immune system. They can also be an effective allergy treatment. In a clinical trial conducted on 130 patients suffering from various diseases showed that oral pharmaceutical thymus extract (derived from the thymus gland of calves) reduced the rate of infection. A number of thymus extract preparations are available and may even stimulate correct thymus function, meaning allergy treatment needn¡¯t be a long-term thing.
Help your body help yourself by taking care of your thymus, and feel allergy symptoms disappear.

Airway Stents
Self-expandable metallic stents (SEMS) are the newest method of opening large airway obstructions. Cleveland Clinic pulmonologists have extensive experience placing SEMS using a flexible bronchoscope. The treatments are safe, can be performed in a procedure room without general anesthesia, and provide immediate relief of symptoms in 95 percent of patients. The procedure can also be performed in the intensive care unit on ventilator-dependent patients.

SEMS, which look like wire-mesh cages, are useful in holding open an airway compromised by a tumor, fistula or other type of tissue. SEMS are not curative, in that they do not change the disease process. These treatments do, however, make breathing easier.

Arterial Blood Gas Analysis
Arterial blood gas analysis is a common test that measures the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. The results reveal whether or not adequate amounts of oxygen are reaching the blood and carbon dioxide is being expelled. The test is done on a blood sample taken from an artery in the arm.

Brachytherapy Treatments
Brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy that involves the temporary placement of small radioactive seeds in the airway near a tumor constricting the airway.

Bronchoscopy
Bronchoscopy is the gold standard test for seeing inside the airway. The test can be performed to diagnose lung diseases or aid in allergy treatments, locating the source of a problem by visualizing the throat, larynx, trachea and lungs and collecting tissue samples for biopsy. For these purposes, a long, thin tube called a flexible bronchoscope is used. The test does not require general anesthesia, although a local anesthetic is used. It involves passing a tube called a bronchoscope through the nose or mouth, past the vocal chords and down the airway as far as necessary. A small camera conveys the images to a television monitor. Bronchoscopy can also be used to remove objects or mucus blocking the airway, or to destroy growths in the airway.

Over 50 million Americans suffer from some kind of allergic disease, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. For this reason, there are a number of treatments available to reduce the severity of allergy symptoms, as well as for the prevention of allergic reactions.

Most allergy treatments are designed to relieve one or more of the symptoms of an allergic reaction (e.g., runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, skin rashes, difficulty breathing). AlleAllergies occur when the immune system mistakes a harmless substance as being dangerous and attacksrgy-relief treatments work for a relatively short amount of time and are usually in the form of medications, including:

    *
Antihistamines (prevent the release of symptom-causing chemicals into the body)

    * Decongestants (reduce nasal and chest congestion)

    *
Corticosteroids and NSAIDs (reduce inflammation)

    * Bronchodilators (open breathing passages)

    *
Other medications (e.g., mast stabilizers cell)

Allergy medications can be administered to an individual through a number of methods, including pills, inhalers, nasal sprays, eye drops, nebulizers and topical creams.

While it is not possible to prevent an allergy from developing, there are some allergy treatments that may prevent allergic reactions (and therefore symptoms) from occurring. These include:

    *
Avoidance. The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to completely avoid the known allergen (e.g., pollen, dust, pet dander). However, avoiding an allergen is often difficult when the allergen is constantly present or an individual is highly sensitive. Although complete avoidance may not be possible, there are ways to limit exposure to allergens.

    *
Allergy shots. This treatment is designed to help a person with a known allergy to overcome their sensitivity to a certain allergen. Through a series of shots, usually over a period of months or years, an individual is gradually exposed to increasing amounts of an allergen until their immune system becomes tolerant to that allergen. However, success is not guaranteed, and there are some risks. Some people fail to respond to the treatment at all, while others may experience severe reactions. In addition, allergy shots are not effective at treating some types of allergies (e.g., food allergies). Allergy shots

Depending on the symptoms associated with the allergy, a surgical treatment may be available. For instance, a myringotomy (a procedure to drain fluid from the ears) may be used to treat ear infections associated with allergic reactions.

There are many “home remedies” and other alternative allergy treatments that are popular. These include types of acupuncture, homeopathic remedies and traditional Chinese medicine. Some may be accepted by licensed physicians and used widely. However, others are not recommended by licensed physicians. These forms of treatment should not be attempted without first speaking to a physician.
